PROCRASTINATION... |
...OR WHY HAVEN'T I STARTED THAT PAPER??!?
With all that you have going on in college, it’s easy to put off important academic tasks. Working a part time job, playing intramural sports, joining a student organization, and – of course – socializing can take your focus away from classes on occasion. While you might be having fun now you will definitely pay for it later. Trying to write an eight page research paper at 3:00 a.m. for your 10:00 a.m. class is stressful, unhealthy, and probably not your best work.
Here are a few ideas to help you deal with procrastination:
Don’t succumb to “all-or-nothing” thinking. Break big projects into smaller, more manageable pieces. Write the introduction to your paper during one session, get your sources together during the next, and tackle other sections one at a time. Having a clear outline will help you do this more easily.
Make sure your study environment is conducive to exactly that – studying. If you are constantly interrupted by friends dropping by, a ringing cell phone, or lots of noise it’s going to be hard to concentrate on the task at hand. Go somewhere to work where no one can find you…the Student Success Center (open 24 hours), 2nd floor of the MUC, Lovejoy Library, an empty classroom, etc.
Keep your friends and family in the loop about your academic projects and deadlines. It can help motivate you if someone else is checking in to see how a paper or research experiment is going.
Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Thinking “if I don’t get an ‘A’ I might as well not even try” is self defeating. Focus on the process as much as the end result. Get assistance if you need it, and schedule an appointment with the Writing Center to get expert advice.
Say no. Sometimes it can be hard to turn down an offer to go out with friends, take an extra shift at work, or do another task for your student organization. But your academics come first. Practice will make this easier! It may mean turning down something you really want to do…but you’ll be much happier when you’re relaxed at the end of the semester instead of bleary-eyed at the computer.
