REVISED TRAFFIC PATTERN
Posted on Thursday 21 May @ 12:04:53 |
Despite the torrential rains the rebuilding of South University Drive is still on schedule. Paving of the Northbound lanes should finish late Friday, 6/26/09.
On Wednesday night (7/1/09), all traffic will be moved over to the new pavement on the Northbound side. Work will begin to rebuild the Southbound side on Thursday morning.
There will be two way traffic on the Northbound (east) side from Stadium Drive to P1 on the North half of the campus core. Southbound traffic will switch over to the Northbound side north of the Hairpin in front of Alumni Hall where you would now make a left turn to go to P1.
Traffic to the hairpin will be limited to bus traffic and special visitors to the Admissions office authorized to park in the hairpin. Access to the hairpin will only be available from the North End and there will be two way traffic from the Hairpin to the P1 intersection.
Access will be provided to and from the South side of Circle Drive (by Rendleman) via two way traffic from the South P1 crossover. The same crossover where you make the U turn if going to S. Circle Drive from Northbound University Drive now.
The project is on schedule for all work to be completed by August 7.

BURNING OF THE PRAIRIE
Posted on Monday 05 May @ 15:24:28 |
Tuesday, May 6, 2008, FM's Grounds Department will try once again to burn the section of prairie on SIUE Campus. The burn has been scheduled twice before, and could not be accomplished due to high winds, excessive rains, and/or other conditions. A little information about the burn:
Spring burning of prairie vegetation is an important part of prairie management. The practice, begun by early cattle ranchers, follows a still older Indian tradition in which spring burning promoted the growth of new grass to sustain the buffalo. Long misunderstood or opposed by the public, prairie fire is now recognized as an important, natural management tool for maintaining the prairie environment.
Fire is an essential element of the prairie ecosystem. Many plants have evolved to adapt to the presence of fire and thrive in it. Though fires have been all but removed from it, in perpetuating the ecosystem, fire is a necessary management tool. SIUE Grounds personnel understand the relationship of fires and the ecosystem, and how to safely and properly apply those principles.

Threatening Email Spam
Posted on Thursday 28 February @ 11:38:25 |
A number of individuals are receiving e-mail(s) that are threatening in nature. The e-mail purports to be from an individual who has a contract to kill the recipient. It offers an optional alternative if the recipients pays a certain amount of money to alter the outcome. If they do not, the e-mail states the contract will be carried out. For Example:
"Subject: BE VERY CAREFUL I am very sorry for you Xxxxxx, is a pity that this is how your life is going to end as soon as you don't comply. As you can see there is no need of introducing myself to you because I don't have any business with you, my duty as I am mailing you now is just to KILL you and I have to do it as I have already been paid for that.............."
The Office of Information Technology, working with the SIUE Police, has determined that this e-mail is spam and is originating from overseas sites. This e-mail appears to be nothing more than cruel SPAM which is not being quarantined by the current spam signature files. Simply delete the e-mail.

New Smoking Law
Posted on Monday 14 January @ 11:22:25 |
As you have probably heard, the Illinois Legislature passed and the Governor signed a new law that took effect January 1, 2008, significantly restricting smoking within the State. As it has been years since SIUE permitted smoking in buildings and University vehicles, the major change here will be that smoking will no longer be allowed within 15 feet of building entrances or ventilation intakes. Additional "No Smoking" signs have been posted, and, when you return, you will see that smoking materials containers have been moved further from the buildings.
There are enforcement provisions in the new law, but it is anticipated that people will continue to voluntarily comply as they have in the past.

Burglary/Theft to Motor Vehicle 101
Posted on Tuesday 28 August @ 08:31:30 |
Don’t become a victim of a burglary or theft to a motor vehicle. ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR & ROLL UP THE WINDOWS!! Burglary is a crime of opportunity. Many would-be thieves are not going to take the time or the chance of breaking into a locked vehicle. In 2006 almost half of the reported burglaries may have been avoided or that number significantly reduced simply by the owners securing their vehicle.
NEVER LEAVE VALUABLES IN PLAIN SIGHT!! Take the extra seconds to place valuables under your seat or in your trunk. Always take your purse, wallet, and cell phones with you. Never leave credit cards or important papers in your vehicle.

North University Drive is Open
Posted on Thursday 12 April @ 16:00:19 |
North University Drive is open! The barricades are down. They may not have gotten all of the warning signs yet, but the road is officially open.
Please drive carefully in the area, the road is different than before the reconstruction and new asphalt can be very slick, especially when wet with dew, frost, or rain.
Over the next couple of weeks there will be contractors still in the area periodically doing landscaping and other finishing work. We do not anticipate these activities closing the road again, but we do ask that you take care to protect the workers.

Alternate Routes Recommended Around Construction Work on Route 157
Posted on Tuesday 19 September @ 16:27:49 |
Construction work on Route 157 at the South entry into the University has reduced access to a single lane both ways. Tuesday morning, September 19, there were backups reported over half an hour long. This lane restriction will be in place for the next few days. Weather permitting, work is now expected to be completed late Monday, September 25. This is an IDOT project, part of the Rt 157 upgrade.
The following alternate routes are recommended:
- IL 255 can be taken north from I270 to New Poag Road. From New Poag Road the campus can be accessed from:
- Stadium Drive to Whiteside;
- NW University Drive;
- and North University Drive.
- From the east - Rt 159 to Center Grove or Governor's Parkway is probably a quicker alternative during the construction.
Meridian Road is closed at Rt 157 and is not an alternative.

Safety Bulletin
Posted on Friday 08 September @ 09:39:01 |
SIUE Police have responded to several Burglaries to Motor Vehicles in the past few weeks. These burglaries have occurred in the Residence Hall Parking Lots, Lots 10, 6, and A. Stereo systems, small electronics, and CDs seem to be targeted in these burglaries. In most cases entry has been gained by punching out a lock.
The following prevention tips, may help keep you from becoming a victim of Burglary to Motor Vehicle:
- ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR. No matter where you park; school, work, or home, lock it and take the keys with you.
- CHECK YOUR VEHICLE DAILY. Time is of the essence in these crimes. If you leave your car in a lot, make sure you check on it to make sure there has been no vandalism or damage.
- ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR WINDOWS ARE CLOSED. Most professional thieves can unlock a car through a very small opening.
- NEVER LEAVE VALUABLES IN SIGHT. When you park your car, take your purse, cellular phone, CD’s, and anything of value and place them out of sight -- better yet, take them with you.
- NEVER LEAVE IMPORTANT PAPERS OR CREDIT CARDS IN YOUR VEHICLE (not even in the glove compartment).
- ALWAYS TRY TO PARK IN WELL-LIT AREAS.
- MOST IMPORTANT – REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY OR SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE THAT YOU OBSERVE IN A PARKING LOT TO THE UNIVERSITY POLICE, IMMEDIATELY!!!.
If you have any information or see anything suspicious, please contact the SIUE Police Department at 650-3324. If it is an emergency situation, dial 911.

On June 19, 2006, the University community was notified that the bridge between the Science Building and the Vadalabene Center over the bike path would be closed for two weeks. During the process of sandblasting the bridge, structural damage to the steel beams was discovered. The beams must be replaced before the installation of deck boards and the painting of the bridge can take place. This delay, in addition to the coming Fourth of July holiday, means the bridge will be closed until July 14, 2006. Due to the work going on above, the portion of the bike path under the bridge will be closed, also. FM regrets the delay and appreciates the patience of the University community.

Telephone Fraud Involving Jury Duty
Posted on Wednesday 22 February @ 11:24:52 |
Don't fall prey to telephone fraud. In the latest con, someone calls pretending to be a court official and indicating that a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury duty. These individuals ask to verify your name, Social Security number, date of birth, and/or credit card numbers. If their request is refused, you are then threatened with fines.
The judicial system does not contact people via the telephone and ask for personal information such as your Social Security number, date of birth or credit card numbers. If you receive one of these phone calls, do not provide any personal or confidential information to these individuals. This is an attempt to steal or to use your identity to defraud you.

Click It or Ticket Campaign
Posted on Monday 23 May @ 14:08:21 |
The SIUE Police Department will join thousands of law enforcement agencies in a nation-wide crackdown on unbelted drivers and passengers beginning Wednesday, May 25, extending through Sunday, June 5.
To show our support of the Click It or Ticket Campaign, the SIUE Police Department will set up Safety Belt Enforcement Zones on campus during this initiative. For many non-seat belt users, and especially young people, the threat of a ticket has proven to be a greater inducement to buckle up than the threat of injury or death.
Please help us make this a successful campaign by buckling up and making sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up before you drive.

Fraud Alert
Posted on Friday 16 July @ 09:15:01 |
Someone impersonating a U.S. Department of Education official is offering students grants for a processing fee.
The United States Department of Education (ED) has issued a bulletin that individuals are impersonating ED officials in order to gain access to students’ checking account numbers. According to the bulletin, the scam works this way: someone claiming to be representing ED calls a student, says that he or she understands the student has federal student loans, and offers to replace the loans with an $8000 grant. The caller explains that a processing fee must be charged and obtains the student’s bank account information.
There is no ED program to replace loans with grants and there is no processing fee to obtain Title IV grants from ED. Furthermore, students should never provide their bank account or credit card information over the phone unless they initiated the call and trust the company they are calling.
At present, we do know that at least one Southern Illinois University Edwardsville student has been contacted by one of these individuals posing as Department of Education representatives. It is extremely important for anyone who has been a victim of the scam to report it to the Department of Education immediately. More detailed information about how to report is available at www.nasfaa.org/publications/2004/eaimpersonate071404.html

School of Nursing Announcement to Students
Posted on Friday 15 November @ 08:26:41 |
It has come to our attention at the School of Nursing that there is misinformation on the current NCLEX-RN examination pass rate and the accreditation status for the School of Nursing. We do not have the NCLEX-RN state and national statistics for 2002, but for 2001, the state average was 84% and the national average was 86%. Currently, the unofficial pass rate for the School of Nursing is 89.6%. We are also fully accredited by two national accrediting bodies and on the fully approved State of Illinois list of nursing schools. If you have any questions about this figure or any other questions concerning the School of Nursing , please contact Wendy Nehring, Acting Associate Dean for Educational Services, at 618-650-3972 or wnehrin@siue.edu.
